The problem
Plenty of trips happen with empty seats. Lugarcito connected people who needed to travel with people who had a car and were going to the same place, so they could coordinate the trip and split the expenses. It made travelling cheaper, a little more sustainable, and occasionally turned a long drive into a new acquaintance.
What I did
I built it with a friend. I was in charge of the technology; he ran marketing.
Decisions & tradeoffs
We wanted to get it out fast, and we already had a repo connected to Google Sheets. So instead of setting up a database, we built on that and shipped.
Outcomes
More than 3,000 visitors a month, but fewer than 100 trips actually completed.
What I learned
We had the demand, not the supply. People were looking for a seat; not enough drivers were offering one, and we couldn't get that side moving. So we closed it.
A marketplace is only as strong as its harder side, and you find out which one that is by launching.
